Highway 39 above Coldbrook Campground
Angeles National Forest (CA)

January 30, 2005

Abutting a side canyon to the North Fork above Coldbrook Campground,
this long collapse resulted from the heavy 2005 January rainfall.
Burnt vegetation is from the curve fire which swept the area
on Labor Day, September 2, 2002.

Above pictured collapse viewed from the east.
Snow is visible at the higher elevations.

About 200 yards further north around a bend, a far deeper collapse of soil
under the state highway, fell into North Fork canyon and will be far more
costly to CalTrans to repair.

Though not as wide as the collapse shown in the far top photo, this collapse falls
hundreds of feet at an extremely steep angle.  Much of the asphalt is unsupported
around the opening, suspended by itself and ready to drop.  This site is located
between Coldbrook and Falling Springs.
